  5. STARTING THE BENCH.EXE PROGRAM
  6. ------------------------------
  7.  
  8. To run the main benchmarks program:
  9.  
  10.                    . make the directory containing the
  11.                      benchmark programs the current
  12.                      directory.
  13.  
  14.                    . type "BENCH" (without the quotes).
  15.  
  16.  
  17. You may use the following command line parameters:
  18.  
  19.  
  20. GO    bypasses the initial logo screens.
  21.  
  22.  
  23. AUTO  starts the benchmarks in automatic mode.  The processor tests
  24.       will cycle through one at a time.  This option uses the
  25.       BENCH.KEY file.  NOTE:  A reboot is required to end AUTO mode.
  26.  
  27.  
  28. LCD   Uses black and white attributes.  Use for forcing better display
  29.       legibility on laptop computers.
  30.  
  31.  
  32. For example, "BENCH GO" will execute the benchmark program and bypass
  33. the initial logo.

  37. MENU OPERATIONS
  38.  
  39. FILE MENU
  40. ---------
  41. The "Save results" selection allows you to save the test results in a
  42. file on your disk. You will have the ability to change the machine
  43. description (See SET MENU) and the name of the file. The file will be
  44. saved in the current directory and will overwrite an old file with the
  45. same name. Be sure not to use the same file name when running the
  46. MicroScope utility.

  48. The "Save results to .CSV" selection is similar to the "Save results"
  49. selection except that the data is stored in comma delimited format for
  50. importing into a database or spreadsheet program. A machine id is
  51. requested and will appear in each record so that the records for
  52. individual machines can be located if they are loaded into a combined
  53. database file.

  55. The "About" selection tells about the benchmark program. The people
  56. involved with the project over the years as well as the languages and
  57. tools used to create the programs are listed.

  59. The "Quit" selection terminates the benchmark program.

  63. VIEW MENU
  64. ---------
  65. The "Results" selection allows you to browse through the test results
  66. on the screen. The format is the same as the results file. You can
  67. scroll up and down using the arrow, PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End keys.
  68. Use the Esc key to return to the main menu.
  69.  
  70. The "System Info" selection executes MicroScope - PC Labs' System
  71. Information Utility. You have the ability to enter a file name for
  72. MacroScope to save the description of the current configuration
  73. of your machine. Be careful not to use the same file name you for
  74. saving the results to disk.

  77. PERFORMANCE MENU
  78. ----------------
  79. The selections on this menu measure the performance capabilities of
  80. your machine. These are the indicators of the raw power of your
  81. machine.

  83. The "Processor..." selection activates the Processor Performance Tests
  84. submenu. The following tests are available:
  85.  
  86.      Instruction Mix
  87.      80486 Instruction Mix
  88.      128K NOP Loop
  89.      Do-nothing Loop
  90.      Integer Add
  91.      Integer Multiply
  92.      String Sort and Move
  93.      Prime Number Sieve
  94.      Floating Point Mix
  95.  
  96. Use the space bar to "check-off" the tests you wish to run and hit the
  97. Enter key. To abort hit the Esc key. Each of your chosen tests will be
  98. run and the results displayed.

  102. The "Coprocessor" selection runs the math coprocessor test. The
  103. results are displayed at the completion of the test.

  107. The "Disk..." selection activates the Disk Performance Tests submenu.

  111.      DOS Disk Access
  112.      DOS File Access

  116. The "Video..." selection activates the Video Performance Tests
  117. submenu. The following tests are available:

  120.      Teletype Without Scrolling
  121.      Teletype With Scrolling

  124. The "Memory..." selection activates the Memory Performance Tests
  125. submenu. The following tests are available:

  128.      Conventional Write

  135. The "Battery Rundown" selection executes the Battery Rundown Test.
  136. This test will drain the battery in a laptop machine by executing
  137. code in a loop and writing files at regular intervals. After the
  138. battery is completely drained, the result of this test can be found
  139. in the files RUNDOWN.001, RUNDOWN.002, and RUNDOWN.003. The longest
  140. duration noted in these files is the result.

  143. COMPATIBILITY MENU
  144. ------------------
  145. The selections on this menu test the compatibility of a piece of
  146. hardware against a published specification. At this time there is only
  147. one choice on this menu.
  148.  
  149. The "VGA Hardware" selection is only valid if you have a VGA graphics
  150. device. It tests your VGA adapter against the IBM standard. Any
  151. deviations from the standard do not necessarily indicate a defective
  152. or unusable board. Many application programs do not use all the
  153. available features and may also contain code to correct for
  154. deficiencies in your particular device.

  157. QUALITY MENU
  158. ------------
  159. The selections on this menu represent tests which must be interpreted
  160. by the individual user. At this time there is only one choice on this
  161. menu.

  163. The "EGA/VGA Monitor" selection allows you to display various test
  164. patterns on your EGA or VGA Monitor using different display modes. The
  165. results will depend on your tastes with respect to size of characters,
  166. text readability, brightness, and contract as well as color
  167. perception.

  170. SET MENU
  171. --------
  172. The "Enter info..." selection allows you to enter a name for the
  173. machine being tested. Up to 25 characters are available. The name you
  174. enter will appear on results screens as well as in the results file.

  177. HELP MENU
  178. ---------
  179. The "Help" selection presents a menu of help topics. Select the topic
  180. to view and hit the Enter key. Hit the Enter key again to return to
  181. the menu.

  183. The "Timer accuracy" selection allows you to test the accuracy of the
  184. internal system timer. By comparing the internal timer to an external
  185. time base, such as a stop watch, you can see if the results derived by
  186. the tests are valid for your machine. A correction factor is displayed
  187. to allow you to adjust for any inaccuracies in your timer.
